Does My Calgary Car Insurance Cover My Windshield?

Of all the questions we receive, more people inquire as to whether Calgary car insurance covers windshield repair and replacement more than anything else. Given our geography and the fact that the City of Calgary and other municipalities apply a mixture of 97 per cent gravel and 3 per cent salt to the roads in bad weather, cracked and chipped windshields are a common concern. Because of the inherent risks to your windshield, it is an important question to ask and we are glad to answer it.

Here is what you need to know about Calgary car insurance, windshield coverage, 13D Endorsements, and much more.
• "Glass coverage" is an optionin car insurance policies. This coverage costs insurance companies billions of dollars a year in claims. It also adds a few dollars to your policy premiums every month.
• You can forego glass coverage on your policy by authorizing a 13D Endorsement. This will lower your rate a little bit, but will leave you exposed to expense should an errant rock cause any chips or cracks as you drive.
• 13D Endorsements are not available for travel trailers, horse trailers or recreational vehicles.
• Filing a 13D Endorsement means that damage to your windshield and glass caused by vandalism and road hazards will not be covered. However, your windshield and glass will still be covered in the event of an accident.

Should I file a 13D Endorsement to save money on my monthly premiums?
If you waive windshield coverage as part of your Calgary car insurance policy you are taking the risk that nothing will happen. If you rarely drive your vehicle during the spring and winter, it may be a wise cost saving measure for you. However, if you drive frequently, you could be leaving your wallet dangerously exposed to costly repairs and out-of-pocket windshield replacement costs.

What should I do if my windshield cracks or chips?
Take care of the problem immediately. Most minor damage can be quickly and easily repaired at a dealership or glass repair shop. By using a special tool to inject resin and apply pressure as it dries, most problems can be resolved. This can eliminate the risk of spreading and "spider webbing" that will require you to replace your windshield.

What does the law say when it comes to windshield replacement?
You can be issued a traffic fine if your windshield has any of the following features:
• Cracks that extend through both layers of glass.
• Extensive pits, scratches, or cracks that obstruct the view.
• Cracks within the path of the windshield wipers that are greater than 12 millimetres long.
Therefore, should your windshield exhibit any of these features, the law requires you to repair or replace your windshield without delay. Speak with your insurance provider about your coverage before taking your car in.
